The Western Railway Corridor consists of a total length of 340km (267km on the main line and 73km on the Awaso branch off), from the coast in Takoradi to the hilly hinterland in Kumasi. Rehabilitation works in a permanent way would cover the replacement of ballast, sleepers and rails as well as the realignment of some existing sections. Generally, realignment is spread throughout the line in order to increase the radius to achieve the design speed of 120km/h. The Western Line (WL) traverses about 13 metropolitan, municipal and district assembly (MMDA) areas; and about 35 major communities spanning 3 regions of Ghana (i.e. Western, Central and Ashanti.
